Work Commitment Questions & Answers

What kind of work will we do?
Work shifts will consist of field work, which generally involves three basic farm tasks: planting, weeding and harvesting. The exact
tasks for any given shift will depend on the weather and what work is most needed at that time (often determined that same day),
and shifts may include a combination of activities. As a general guide, May-June shifts will involve more planting, June-Aug shifts
will involve more weeding, and Aug-Sept shifts will involve more harvesting.  We will provide basic instruction and supervision.
In general, you will be doing a lot of bending, reaching, kneeling, standing, walking, and sweating. You will also be doing some
talking and laughing and enjoying being outside on the farm.

If you are physically unable to do field work, we have a limited number of needs for other special tasks - such as photography,
writing, and price scouting. Please contact us before the season begins to discuss these or other ideas you may have.

When will work times be available?
Member work shifts are included on our 2012 CSA Calendar. The schedule includes weekend and evening opportunities from April
through September. In addition, Wednesdays from 9:00 - 12:00 is a standing member work shift. Members completing the one-time
working visit are expected to select from these work shifts. Members who are completing the expanded work commitment may choose
from these shifts and/or arrange other work times in consultation with Eric. We have a special need for "Harvest Helpers" on Monday
and Thursday mornings in September after our summer crew departs.

How do we sign up for our work time?
Members should sign up for their selected work shifts(s) at the beginning of the season, preferably by June 1st. To sign up, simply send
us an email (or complete the handy on-line
sign-up form) indicating your selected shift date. Generally space will be limited to about 10
workers per shift, so we may ask you to choose a different shift if the one you've selected is already full.

What happens if we can't make the work day we signed up for?
Members are expected to attend the work shift they have signed up for - we are counting on you! Please choose accordingly and
mark your calendars for the day you've selected! However, we understand that at times unavoidable conflicts come up. Should this
occur, please contact us
prior to your scheduled shift to reschedule.

What happens if it is raining (snowing, hailing, etc...)?
We will work in light rain. If severe bad weather is forecast, we may opt to reschedule a work day. If this occurs, we will send out
an email by 7:30 am (or 90 minutes prior to the scheduled start time). Please check your email or call us (966-8698) prior to
coming down in case of inclement weather.

Who can complete our work commitment?
The work commitment may be completed by any member age 16 years or older from a share household. For the expanded work
commitment, the same individual must complete all four (or more) work shifts, in order to master basic farm work skills needed
to optimize the benefit for the farm.

Can more than one person work together to fulfill our work commitment?
We welcome families and friends to come work together (please see below for important information on working with children).
For the expanded work commitment, the same individual must complete all four (or more)
additional work shifts. If multiple
individuals from a share household wish to make the expanded work commitment, each individual may earn the credit for their
completed work. For example, if a couple work
s four additional shifts together, that household would have completed two
expanded work commitments, and would earn a credit of $80 per worker, for a total credit of $160.

Can children come along for work days?
We love all of your children and welcome them to visit the farm to play and learn. Work hours can only be counted toward
fulfillment of a work commitment for individuals age 16 years and older. With parental permission, willing youth aged 12 years or
older may join their parents in a work task.
All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a non-working supervising
adult or responsible older youth
. Apart from the fact that it is difficult to supervise children and work effectively at the same time,
labor laws do not permit unsupervised young children to be with you in the field while you are working.

What do we need to bring?
You should always wear sturdy close-toed shoes or boots (NO FLIP FLOPS!) and bring a water bottle. A broad-brimmed hat,
sunscreen or protective clothing, and work/gardening gloves are recommended.  We will provide any other tools needed. Please
dress for the weather and plan to get dirty.

Can we combine work and other activities on our visit?
Yes! Make it fun! Sign up and carpool with a group of fellow members - with some coming to do work, others to watch children,
and others to play inspiring work songs on their guitars. Bring a picnic and hang out after you work for a hike or a swim.
Integrating work and social activity is a core of farm life.

Can we come to more than one work day?
Of course! We hope that many members will volunteer additional hours and welcome you to come to as many work days as you
wish, as long as there is space available. If you can commit to
four or more  additional work shifts, consider the expanded work
commitment.

Please contact us if you have any additional questions about the work commitment.
Thank you for your contribution to the success of our farm!
CSA Work Commitment

Member work commitments are an integral component of
traditional CSA models as a true partnership between
farmers and consumers.    Member work helps keep the cost
of shares down and provides a deeper connection to the food
you eat.  Members generally find work to be fun, educational
and rewarding - and we genuinely appreciate and value your
contribution.

Our share prices are based on the expectation that each CSA
member household will complete at least one working visit
(or approved equivalent) during the season. Members may
choose a more extensive ongoing work commitment, or may
opt out of working. See details on these options and other
common Q&As below.

Please check the
CSA calendar for available work shifts. To
sign up for your work shift, email us or complete the on-line
sign up form.
One Working Visit:
our standard work commitment

We strongly encourage each member household to complete
at least one working visit to the farm over the course of the
season. We will have several
work shifts scheduled each
month from April through September, including both
weekend, weekday and evening shifts. Members can
sign up
for their selected work shift at the beginning of the season.
Each work shift is approximately 2 1/2 hours.

For those members who are unable to complete field work,
we will have a limited number of options for special tasks -
such as newsletter articles, photography and price scouting -
that can be arranged on an individual basis. Hosting a
delivery site also fulfills the one-time work commitment.

The CSA share prices listed on our 2012 membership
agreement form assume this one-time work commitment
will be fulfilled.
Expanded Work Commitment:
an invitation to willing workers

This option is for members who can make a more significant
work commitment of at least four
additional working visits over
the course of the season. Members who choose an expanded
work commitment will receive a  credit of $80 (or higher if
more
shifts are worked) upon completion of their work.

Each work shift is approximately 2 1/2 hours. Work shifts can
occur on
scheduled member work days or other times when we
may need additional help. We have a special need for "Harvest
Helpers" on Mondays and Thursdays in September when our
interns depart. In order to master basic farm work skills, the
same individual must complete all four work shifts to receive
the credit. Please contact us to discuss details if you are
interested in this option.
Opt-out

The work commitment is voluntary. While we believe it is important (and
rewarding) for all members to contribute to the work of our farm, we
recognize this is not for everyone. Members may opt out of the work
commitment, which increases the price of your CSA share by $25.00
